Text vb.

Text vb. has been generated via a text conversation, the face illuminated and filmed on an iPhone. The artist plays a number and word association game in a strange reversal of the Turing test – human imitating machine. All that is seen is the facial response.

Video installation as part of Art Language Location. 2015

Failing beautifully

Stills from Failing Beautifully

A pixelated video of a digital reproduction of Malcolm Le Grice’s ‘Little Dog for Roger’

I was exploring analogies between moving image and textile construction, comparing analogue and digital processes. The idea that when analogue film fails it can do so beautifully (imperfections and injuries to the materiality of the film can add to the effect) whereas digital is on or off, works or doesn’t. I took a digitised version of an analogue film from the library and its worn nature meant that it glitched and pixelated, generating a fascinating (and beautiful) fusion of analogue and digital failure.
